Have you ever noticed how there are certain places, activities, or people around whom you feel completely yourself?
No masks. No expectations. No need to explain or justify who you are.
You can just be.
I've been thinking about this lately, and I'd love to invite you to explore it with me.
I can think of two experiences where I feel most like myself.
The first is when I'm guiding creative visualizations.
I've been doing this, on and off, for about 15 years. And every time I guide someone through an imaginative inner journey, something in me comes alive.
It feels so natural. So effortless.
You could wake me up in the middle of the night and ask me to guide you through a visualization, and I could happily do it.
I don't need to rehearse or prepare extensively. I don't feel the need to prove my credentials or explain why I'm qualified.
I simply feel at home doing it.
The second place where I feel most like myself is at the beach.
I grew up in Bombay, just across the street from the beach. Some evenings, we'd walk over to watch the sunset, feel the sand beneath our feet, and look out at the endless horizon.
I've visited beaches in Italy, Mexico, France, and along the American East Coast. And no matter where I am, I experience that same feeling.
The vastness of the ocean. The place where the sky and water seem to meet. The simple pleasure of looking for seashells or walking barefoot in the sand.
I feel like a little girl again.
Here's something interesting: I didn't learn to swim until I was 30, and I'm still afraid of swimming in the ocean!
But I don't need to be in the water to feel completely at ease.
Just being near it is enough.
And yet, despite now living only a couple of hours from the North Carolina coast, I've visited the beach just once in the past few months.
It made me realize something.
We can know exactly what brings us joy and still forget to make room for it.
Not because those things are unimportant to us, but because everyday responsibilities, obligations, and distractions have a way of filling the space.
And sometimes, without even noticing, we drift away from the experiences that make us feel most alive.
We get so caught up in everything that needs doing that we forget to make time for the things that don't need doing at all.
The things we do simply because we love them.
An afternoon by the water. An hour in a bookshop. A walk among the trees. A conversation with someone who truly understands us.
No project to complete. No business to grow. No outcome to achieve.
Just the pleasure of being alive.
And perhaps we don't need to make dramatic changes to feel more connected to ourselves.
Maybe we can begin by remembering the moments when we already felt that connection, and making a little more room for them.

This Week's Introspective Practice
Here’s a simple reflection you might enjoy this week.
Find a quiet moment. Close your eyes, if you like, remember a time when you felt completely yourself.
Maybe you were walking among trees, dancing in your kitchen, painting, gardening, sitting in your favorite café, or laughing with someone around whom you could let your guard down.
Return to that moment in your imagination.
Where were you? What were you doing? Who was there?
What did it feel like to be you in that moment?
Stay with that feeling for a little while. And then ask yourself:
How might I invite a little more of this into my life?
It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture.
It can be walk in your city’s flower garden, an hour at a bookstore, a conversation with a friend who truly sees you, or simply sitting on the balcony with a cup of tea watching the sky for a few minutes (I call this skytime and I love it).
Even just a few minutes doing something we love can be a beautiful beginning.
No project to complete. No business to develop. No outcome to achieve.
Just the simple pleasure of being alive.
I'd love to hear what came to mind for you. Hit reply and tell me: When do you feel most like yourself?
Warmly
Sophia
